Local NYC baseball coach says he fended off ICE agents from coming after players during practice
everyday heroes are emerging
ICE agents showed up at a youth baseball practice, questioning kids and threatening to arrest the coach when he stepped in to defend them. Every child on the team is a U.S. citizen.
"The agent said, 'If the kids are here legally, what do they have to lose,’” the coach recounted. “I told them they still have their 4th and 5th Amendment rights.”
"I told my kids to walk to the back of the cages, right here, and I said they're going to invoke their fifth amendment rights, they're not going to say anything," Wilder said.
He says one of the officers raised his voice.
"That's when I was called a YouTube lawyer, and I said, 'No, I just know how the Constitution works,'" Wilder said.
Youman Wilder, who’s coached on Manhattan’s West Side for 20 years and holds a law degree, has since changed the practice schedule to help his players feel safe.
Coach Youman in Harlem is a true hero. We should all follow his lead and stand up the way he has. It’s going to take all of us.
